Selecting the Right Writing Sample

guidelines to consider

When it comes to choosing a writing sample, there is no perfect answer. However, there are several key guidelines to keep in mind as you make your selection:

1. Proofread carefully to ensure there are no typos or grammatical errors in the writing.

2. Prioritize clarity over complexity. Avoid overly academic or convoluted writing and focus on a more practical, accessible style that a client would appreciate.

3. Choose a writing sample that closely matches the style and industry focus of the work you would be doing in your new role. While subject matter is less important than good writing, relevance can be helpful in assessing your abilities.

4. Consider reviewing the bios of your interviewers for additional insights into the subject matter they might find most relevant or interesting.

5. Be honest about your role in drafting the work. You should be able to say that you were the primary author, with limited edits or revisions from others. However, it's understood that work produced for a firm will likely have some input from others.

6. Aim for a writing sample in the 6-12 page range, but don't get too fixated on the exact length.

7. Ensure that any confidential information is properly redacted, particularly client or party names and other identifying details. When possible, use a brief, motion, or other publicly filed writing to avoid the need for redaction and maintain better flow.

8. Be prepared to discuss the subject of the writing articulately in an interview, after refreshing your memory on the details of the matter.

9. Remember that the weight given to writing samples varies among decision-makers. Some will scrutinize them closely, while others may not read them at all. It's unlikely that the writing sample alone will make or break your candidacy.

10. Trust your instincts. Select the writing sample that you feel (not just think) best showcases your strongest writing abilities.
