South Carolina Lateral Movement Overview

In 2018, there were a total of 49 lateral attorney moves in South Carolina. 22 with Associate, 14 with Partner, 9 with Counsel and 4 with Attorney titles. The top five practices with the most movement are as follows:

  1. Litigation - 40% of Lateral Moves

  2. Intellectual Property -18% of Lateral Moves

  3. Corporate -10% of Lateral Moves

  4. Labor & Employment - 9% of Lateral Moves

  5. Health Care - 8% of Lateral Moves

PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS

A tax, health care and litigation team of four partners left Smith Moore Leatherwood/Fox Rothschild to start a Charleston office for Shumaker Loop. Two additional health care partners from Grayson Thomas joined the Shumaker office in later 2018 to bring the partner count to six in the Charleston office. In Greenville, Parker Poe added two IP partners from Nexsen Pruet to a rapidly growing office. Womble recruited one of Wyche’s corporate partners to the Greenville office in March while Wyche added a corporate partner from Jenner Block’s Chicago office in June. Jackson Lewis added an ERISA partner from Ogletree in Greenville and Nelson Mullins recruited a litigation partner from Bowman and Brooke in Columbia.

ASSOCIATE HIGHLIGHTS

18% of South Carolina associate movement can be attributed to associates moving out of the region. Associates moved to Richmond, VA, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh. 55% of associates relocated from another state to the South Carolina region. Associates relocated from New York, Atlanta, Missouri, West Virginia, Connecticut, Michigan and DC. The firms with the most relocated candidates were: Womble Bond, Dority Manning, K&L Gates, Wyche and Nelson Mullins. The practice areas with the most associate movement in the South Carolina region were Intellectual Property, Litigation, Labor & Employment, and Corporate. Five of the lateral moves were in Charleston, six of the lateral moves were in Columbia and seven were in Greenville.
